With Jeff Hoelle, I coordinate the Agriculture, Land and Environment (ALE) research cluster at UCSB. ALE aims to encourage critical discussion and scholarship across the fields of agrarian studies, political ecology, land use, and environmental studies, and is open to faculty and students from any discipline studying and teaching about these issues. We run a regular workshop where we offer collective feedback on works-in-progress, an occasional reading series, and host agrarian studies scholars, practitioners, and artists.
With Jorge Ramirez-Lopez and Ricado Jacobs, I am part of the Agrarian and Indigenous Studies Research Group. We are a group of faculty in the Department of Global Studies committed to supporting undergraduate and graduate research in the fields of agrarian and indigenous studies. Our research covers the US/Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East and explores topics including borders, class, food systems, labor, migration, political ecology, race, rural/urban relations, social movements, techno-science and territory. We work within decolonial and Marxist traditions, and use historical (archival and oral histories), sociological, and ethnographic methods to understand the political horizons of contemporary agrarian and indigenous struggles.
